This was an article from a contributing writer that I am particularly proud to have edited. When this article was submitted, it was all over the place. The writer made lots of great points, but did not convey them clearly.
Through many rounds of edits, it got to the place it's in today, which is much improved from the first draft I read. And still, I feel that the writer's voice was fully maintained, which was very important to me ethically. It would have been much easier to sit down by myself and rewrite the entire piece, but instead I sat down with the writer for many hours, and helped her find their own voice. That was also important from a diversity perspective: this year she has been the only transgender writer to have anything published in The Cypress.
